March 3^rd is World Tennis Day and a day for us to look at the success of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ men’s and women’s tennis programs.  ¾«¶«´«Ã½ women’s tennis has won four National Championships and is the last Viking team to win a national title in 2005.  Mercer men’s tennis has come close to winning a national title, finishing as Runner-Up in 2016 and 3^rd place in 2022. At the 2022 National Championship, the Vikings won three national titles: Ronaldo Jacamo was National Champion at 1^st Singles, Alfred Kandakai was National Champion at 2^nd Singles and Jacamo and Kandakai were National Champions at 1^st Doubles.

Men’s tennis has 17 All-Americans in program history.  Head Coach Marc Vecchiolla has helped turn ¾«¶«´«Ã½ tennis into a national power.  In 12 seasons as Men’s Tennis Head Coach, Vecchiolla has 89 wins.  Mercer’s first Head Men’s Tennis Coach Stan Dlugosz collected 113 wins in 14 seasons.  Overall, ¾«¶«´«Ã½ men’s tennis has 207 program wins.  Andy Stoll has took over the men’s tennis program after Covid and helped lead the Vikings to a third place finish at the 2022 NJCAA National Championship.  Last spring, Peyton Miller won the Region 19 Championship at 1^st Singles, but was unable to compete at the National Championship due to a shoulder injury.

Mercer women’s tennis has had 31 All-Americans in program history.  Head Coach Marc Vecchiolla has 113 wins in 24 seasons along with four national titles.  Overall, ¾«¶«´«Ã½ women’s tennis has 155 program wins.  The Vikings moved to NJCAA Division I two years ago from NJCAA Division III and competed at the NJCAA Division I National Championship as a scoring team for the first time, finishing in 25^th place.

¾«¶«´«Ã½ women’s tennis teams will feature some talent from around the world.  Two women’s players are from Venezuela: freshman Andrea Vasquez (San Felipe, Venezuela/Hightstown HS) and sophomore Valeria Vargas (Valencia, Venezuela/Instituto Santa Cruz).  

On World Tennis Day, we are grateful for the strong success and history of Mercer men’s and women’s tennis and look forward to their continued success on the courts this spring.
