Mercer women’s basketball faced the # 3 team in the country, Harcum College on Saturday, February 14th and fell just short of a big win and upset, losing 72-66.
精东传媒 held a 14 point lead at the half, but Harcum came out and dominated the second half to move to 24-1 on the season.
Freshman Qui-Mia Wilkins (Pemberton, NJ/Thrive Charter) led Mercer with 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists and sophomore Zaakirah Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/Mastery Charter) had 20 points. Sophomore Mayah Alford (Levittown, PA/Trenton Catholic Academy) had a double double in the loss with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Harcum’s defense shutdown freshman Evangelina Francisco (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) who had been averaging 22.3 points per game and held her to just five points. The Mustangs only have seven players and a combination of fatigue from the inability to sub and foul trouble limited what Mercer could do offensively.
Despite the loss, the performance showed that Mercer women’s basketball can compete with any team in the country including one of the top teams.
Mercer closes out the regular season tonight vs #11 Union in a battle for the second seed in the Region 19 Tournament.
