West Windsor, N.J. – In his first appearance this season, Mercer County Community College (¾«¶«´«Ã½) pitcher Cody Astbury, a sophomore from Hamilton, turned in a stellar performance on the mound against Rowan College at Gloucester in the second game of a doubleheader played at the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ baseball stadium Feb. 28.
Astbury pitched seven innings, striking out seven and giving up just six hits. The Vikings won the game 1-0 in the bottom of 9th on a walk-off single. Freshman Ryan Kastner pitched the last two innings.
Astbury’s performance earned him a nomination by the Garden State Athletic Conference as Player of the Week.
Ranked in the top 20 nationally in Div. II heading into the season, ¾«¶«´«Ã½ is currently 6-0. (Gloucester was ranked no. 7 nationally in Div. III going into the season.) Mercer also won the first game 1-0, with sophomore Austin Constantini on the mound for six innings and sophomore reliever John Wilkins closing out the game.
